Bored cat in an apartment: 7 simple ideas to keep them entertained

An indoor cat sleeps a lot, but it also needs to hunt, climb, hide, and explore. When these needs aren't met, boredom can manifest as nighttime meowing, scratching the sofa, or "attacking" ankles. Here are 7 simple ideas to keep your cat occupied every day.

1. Short but daily play sessions

Two or three 5 to 10-minute sessions are better than one long game every once in a while. Mimic prey: it hides, stops, takes off again... then let your cat catch it at the end so it finishes on a high note.

2. A toy that reacts when touched

Toys that move or make noise upon contact awaken the hunting instinct. Our interactive bird chirps and flaps its wings as soon as a paw touches it, and a small pouch holds catnip. Tip: put it away after the session to keep the surprise effect, and always supervise playtime.

3. A hiding spot all to itself

Hiding reassures a cat and allows it to observe without being seen. A cardboard box works, but a closed nest quickly becomes a sanctuary: the felt tunnel bed serves as both a cozy bed and a tunnel for playing hide-and-seek.

4. Making mealtimes last longer

Rather than eating everything in 30 seconds, your cat can "work" for its food: treat-dispensing balls, kibble hidden around the house, or a licking mat spread with wet food. Licking is a calming activity that keeps them occupied for several minutes.

5. Getting up high

Cats love to observe from above. Clear off a shelf, the top of a piece of furniture, or set up a cat tree near a window: watching the birds is a real show for them.

6. Changing the toys' locations

A toy that is always lying in the same spot becomes invisible. Keep a few in a drawer and rotate them every week.

7. Water that invites drinking

Many cats prefer moving water. A water fountain placed away from the food bowl and litter box can encourage them to drink more often.

When to consult?

If your cat suddenly changes its behavior (aggression, inappropriate elimination, loss of appetite, unusual meowing), talk to your veterinarian: it isn't always boredom.
