At-home grooming: clipping your dog or cat without the stress

Hair between the paw pads, a matted belly, claws clicking on the tile: some grooming can be done at home, provided you take it gently. Here is a simple, step-by-step method.

1. Prepare the area

Choose a calm moment, after a walk or a play session. Place your pet on a non-slip surface with good lighting, and keep treats close at hand.

2. Get them used to it before cutting

The first few times, simply show them the tool, turn it on from a distance, and reward them. The noise is often what worries them most: a quiet pet clipper helps sensitive animals. To keep your companion occupied during the session, a licking mat stuck to the wall with some wet food often works wonders.

3. Trim small areas

  • Cut in the direction of hair growth, never pulling the skin taut.
  • Start with the easy areas: underside of the paws, between the pads, belly.
  • Take breaks and stop before your pet gets restless.

For a full groom, tight knots, or a very stressed animal, seek advice from a professional groomer.

4. Claws: grind rather than cut

A pet nail grinder removes length little by little, which limits the risk of hitting the quick of the claw. One or two claws a day is enough to start. If there is bleeding or you are in doubt, ask your vet to show you how.

5. Brush regularly

Brushing once a week (more during shedding season) reduces hair in the house. Grooming gloves are often better accepted than a brush: for the animal, it feels like a pet.

6. Always end on a positive note

A treat, a game, cuddles: your companion will associate grooming with a good time, and the next session will be easier.
